Being Cyber Wise

Love gaming, watching videos and chatting with friends? Make sure your online adventures stay safe with these simple, smart tips!

So, what is cyber bullying?
Cyberbullying is when someone uses technology to hurt, tease or put another person down. It can happen through messages, social media, emails, apps or online games. Because things can spread quickly online, cyberbullying can feel really upsetting… but remember, you can always speak up and ask a trusted person for help. Being kind online makes the internet a better place for everyone!

WHAT YOU CAN DO
If something online has upset you or made you feel uncomfortable, don’t panic – there are things you can do. Try these simple strategies:

  • IGNORE NASTY MESSAGES. Sometimes ignoring a mean comment can make it go away, especially if it happens once. But if someone keeps sending hurtful messages, tell a trusted person and take action.
  • TALK TO A TRUSTED ADULT. The best way to stop cyberbullying is to tell an adult you trust about what’s happening. You have the right to feel safe and supported online, and no one should make you feel uncomfortable or picked on when you’re using the internet.
  • DON’T FIGHT BACK. It can be tempting to reply with something hurtful, but this can make things worse. Remember, anything you send can be saved or shared, so think before you respond.
  • KEEP A COPY OF THE MESSAGES. Saving screenshots of hurtful messages can help. If you need support from a trusted adult, you’ll have a record of what happened.
  • BLOCKING THE PERSON. If someone is being mean online, block them. Blocking stops them from contacting you through that account, giving you space and helping you feel safer online.

Witness woes
If you see someone being bullied online or in real life, you can help. Remember, only step in if it feels safe to do so.

IF YOU FEEL SAFE YOU CAN:

  • Tell the person to stop
  • Distract them by changing the subject
  • Help them leave the situation
  • Get a trusted adult to help

IF YOU FEEL UNSAFE YOU CAN:

  • Check in with the person later
  • Tell a trusted adult what happened
  • Let them know that you’re there for them
